Learning & Teaching: Lectures, Tutorials and Exercises

During the two lectures each week, new material will be presented in concentrated form. Lectures can only work well when backed up by regular review of the material and serious engagement with exercises and homework. During lectures students should let the lecturer know when something remains unclear or is not understand as presented: DO ASK QUESTIONS!

TUTORIALS help you to familiarise yourself with new concepts, definitions and methods, and to test your understanding. For this there will will be plenty of introductory exercises to be treated during tutorial classes and in group work. You get guidance and advice from your tutor.

EXERCISE CLASSES and HOMEWORK treat the subject matter in more detail and will occasionally also comprise slightly more challenging exercises. Again, group work is encouraged; the actual written submission of homework exercises, however, is do be an individual effort: written presentation is an import skill to be trained here. For admission to the exam at the end of term you are expected to have submitted reasonable written solutions to at least one thrid of the exercises. Furthermore, we expect any student to present at least one solution on the blackboard during the exercise classes.

On the exercise sheets, homework exercises will not be singled out as such. Rather, we advise you to hand in any reasonably complete, worked out exercise solutions that you make an effort to write up. Feedback on written homework will not be via numerical scores, but through a marking that includes helpful commentary and a rough classification of the quality of your work.

During exercise classes, some selected previous homework exercises will be discussed, based on short presentations of individual solutions by students. Such a presentation is part of the requirements for admission to the exam.
