0900 to 1700 and Thursday 0900 to 1200

Signing up for the exam starts July 22 and takes place in the Sprachenzentrum - Studienbüro. Signing up via email or via phone is also possible.

Synopsis

English for Mathematicians

Synopsis

This module focuses on the communication of mathematics in the medium of English. Its main aim is to raise language awareness and to provide the necessary knowledge and practice in the use of English for the specific purpose of communicating mathematics.
Students receive guidance and training in written and spoken English with particular emphasis on the communication of mathematical ideas, mathematical argument and mathematical writing. They learn to express themselves in English at the level and in the style appropriate for mathematical presentations, both orally and in writing.
The course will enhance skills in subject specific communication for an international English-speaking academic and professional environment.

Contents

Communication in an international scientific environment: oral and written presentations in English; specific modes of mathematical communication.
English for mathematical papers and English for mathematical presentations: logic and structure of mathematical argument and exposition; idiom and style of good mathematical writing.
Idiosyncrasies of Mathematical English; common mathematical terminology; specific vocabulary; terms of Greek and Latin origin; spelling and pronunciation; grammar and punctuation; symbols and abbreviations; phraseology, diction and elocution.
Analysis of mathematical text samples.
Common mistakes and pitfalls: spelling, pronunciation, grammar and sentential structure, punctuation, idiomatics, etc.
